If you have a BlackBerry:
How does it work?
BluePont server checks whether there is the right person within a short distance. Location info is supplied by your BlackBerry's GPS (location service based on satellites) or LBS (location service based on cell towers) unit.
How do I locate the person I'm about to meet?
When
you get an alert, you'll see the other person's photo (if the other
person uploaded the photo on the site, which is why it's important to
do) and will be able to exchange private text messages (messages are
exchanged through BluePont server and your phone number is not sent or
included in any way). Exchange messages to pick the exact location to
meet in your immediate vicinity, address each other by first name (also
shown to you with alert) and now you've met.
Are there any fees?
A lot goes into making this groundbreaking service a reality.
You can receive an unlimited number of Mobile Meeting alerts absolutely free. Once you receive an alert, you will see the photo and all the information available about the other person. Typically, you won't physically see the other person, as they may be a few blocks away, around the corner, etc. If you initiate the message exchange (i.e. send the first message) and receive a reply, you will be asked for a small one-time fee, payable by credit card, which will enable unlimited Mobile Meeting messaging for 1, 2, or 3 months depending on the option you choose: $8.95 for 1 month, $14.95 for two months, or $19.95 for three months. Again, the fees are one-time, non-recurring, and enable unlimited Mobile Meeting messaging for the time period of your choice.
Does BluePont work in the background?
Absolutely. When you choose Send to Background from menu, BluePont is sent to the background where it continues to function. When there is somebody to meet, it will go to foreground with info about the other person and alert you.
How close should two people be to get the alert?
GPS and especially LBS location precision varies but generally you get alerted when you are within a few hundred yards (a few hundred meters) of each other.
What if I turn off my BlackBerry?
When you turn your BlackBerry back on, BluePont starts automatically and runs in the background. You can always double-check if BluePont is working by clicking on BluePont icon (normally found in Applications). If you see the screens "Keep doing whatever you are doing ... We'll be on the lookout for you." BluePont is working. Just press menu and Send to Background to send it back to the background.
I got the alert, met the person, and then did Exit Contact. Is BluePont still working?
Yes. Exit Contact returns BluePont Mobile to where it was prior to the alert (Contact). If it was in the background, it goes back to the background and works from there. BluePont stops working only if you choose Quit BluePont from the menu.
